The Great Hollow Juried Painting and Photography Show celebrates its eighth year in 2025. Over the past seven years, this show has raised over $10,000 for Great Hollow Nature Preserve.
The 2025 Show will be held in person at the legendary Great Hollow Gate House Barn, as well as continue online for an additional six weeks, giving artists the opportunity for increased local and national exposure of their work.
Artists are invited to submit up to four digital images of two-dimensional work for the competition. Accepted media are photographs, paintings, collages, drawings, and digitally augmented art.
No fee is required to submit. The hanging fee for the show is $15 for each accepted work. The Great Hollow Photographers Club will retain a 25% commission on all works sold during the show. All works must be for sale because the profits from the show support Great Hollow Nature Preserve’s mission of environmental education, research, and conservation.
The artwork should highlight the richness of rural nature in and around Great Hollow and should not have previously been part of a Great Hollow Art Show. Landscapes, wildlife, flowers, animal portraits and other themes are welcome.
The artwork will be judged by the following criteria:
Creativity: The artwork should demonstrate the artist’s unique perspective, imagination, and skillful use of the medium’s tools and techniques.
Story-telling: The artwork should draw in the viewer and invite interpretation, discovery and, perhaps, be powerful enough to evoke an emotional response.
Skills: The artworkshould convey the artists’ understanding of composition, perspective, selective focus, figure-ground relationships, lighting, texture, structure, and contrast, as appropriate to the image.
Ned Reade will be the juror for the painting, and Lori Adams will be the juror for the photography. Local businesses will donate prizes for first, second, and third place in both paintings and photography.
Additionally, winners and honorable mentions will be invited to participate in a follow-up physical and virtual show at the Sherman Library in Sherman, CT, in late summer.
The deadline to submit your images is midnight on Tuesday, April 15, 2025
You will be emailed whether your image is accepted by Friday, April 25, 2025
Each accepted work must:
1) Pay the $15 hanging fee by midnight on Sunday, May 4, 2025
2) Be no larger than 30 inches on the longest side.
3) Be securely wired from side to side for hanging: i.e., no saw-tooth hangers or hooks on cardboard. Artwork not meeting this requirement will not be exhibited, and the hanging fee will not be refunded.
4) Be delivered to the Gate House Barn at Great Hollow on either Wednesday, May 14 between 3 to 6 pm or Thursday, May 15 between 3 to 5 pm. The show will be hung Thursday night May 15th; no deliveries are accepted after 5pm on Thursday, May 15.
5) Unless other arrangements are made in advance, all unsold work must be picked up on Sunday, May 18 between 4 to 6 pm.
The show will take reasonable precautions to secure the artwork. By submitting their artwork, each artist understands that Great Hollow Photographers Club does not provide insurance for loss or breakage and that the artist must provide this insurance if desired.
